Truly unifying

A unifying community experience, Margaret Mahy Family Playground is built in post-earthquake Christchurch and opened in 2015. A significant piece of the inner city revitalisation project, Playspace was involved end-to-end, from concept design to installation.

The process for design was unique and geared towards ensuring the space would really meet the requirements of the local community. It involved consulting with local children, and as a result, the playground is exceptional, with never-before-seen elements and several pieces sourced from top suppliers from around the globe to create an unforgettable wet and dry play experience.

With giant slides and spanners, a 40 metre double racing cableway and generous specially-designed custom net climbers, the playground also features an impressive water play element. Kids have the opportunity to really experience the sensory wonders of water as they pump, spin, tip and redirect it through different channels and into pools.

The project renews the community feel and helps build hope in Christchurch, encouraging laughter, energy and adventure in every child who interacts with it. It is designed to be inclusive, with equipment for all ages and abilities, and respectful of local culture and history.

One of the biggest play spaces in the Southern Hemisphere, it is a multi-stage project that stretches across an entire city block. Stage 2 was opened in July, and includes an 8 metre spiral slide and plenty of testing climbing, centred around an impressive tower. It challenges children to conquer fears in a safe environment, and is an excellent boost to fitness for young and old.
